Who Daily Loads Us With Blessings

When I was a teenager in Helena, Montana, our home on Townsend Avenue was open. It was regularly noisy with neighborhood kids and friends from school—laughing, chasing, playing, getting snacks, staying for dinner, staying over night. They felt welcome and were welcome. And they indulged the offered blessings. My best friend, Joe, had a reputation, however, for taking advantage of this open door policy—something my mom pretended to complain about, but actually took a kind of motherly pride in. If the scent of cookies or donuts was in the air, he would catch wind of the project and stop in for “supplies.”

I remember a particular occasion when Joe and I happened to pay the kitchen a visit at a very serendepitous moment. Mom was making donuts and there were oodles of them on the cooling rack, fresh and hot. We sprang into action. I thought I was being a little aggressive when I grabbed three or four. But Joe loaded up every finger on one hand—a dozen donuts maybe, stuffed one in his mouth, and grabbed a couple more with his free hand. He was never bashful around free food. My mother hollered at us, more to stay in practice than from real anger, and out the door we went. As we walked down the street, we laughed and rejoiced at our good fortune … we had made off like bandits … loaded with the bounty of Mrs. B.

This memory reminds me of Psalm 68:19, “Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us with blessings.” God’s heart is giving. He wants to bless men. He wants to see them happy and satisfied. His whole history with man can be boiled down to one painful picture— God holding out his hands with offered blessing and the majority of mankind saying “no” to his beneficence. They don’t want his offered blessings. They want the blessings they provide for themselves…which always bring disappointment, pain, and sorrow. But for those who say “yes,” God daily loads them with blessings. “His mercies are new every morning.”

What are the blessings that God wants to daily load us with? Here is a small sampling:
— joy unspeakable and full of glory (1 Pet. 1:8)
— peace that the world cannot give and cannot take away (John 14:27)
— peace that surpasses understanding (Phil. 4:7)
— rivers of living water flowing out of our belly (John 7:38)
— a renewed mind (Rom. 12:2)
— wisdom (James 1:5)
— strengthening in the inner man (Eph. 3:16)
— the whole armor of God (Eph. 6:10-17)
— light for our path in a dark world (Ps. 119:105, 2 Pet. 1:19)
— seeing life’s troubles in their true perspective (2 Cor. 4:17, Rom. 8:28)
— placing your hope where it really belongs (1 Pet. 1:13)

Saints, don’t be bashful. Waltz into God’s kitchen…where he is cooking up all kinds of blessings that he wants you to enjoy…and load your fingers up! If we were to go after his bounties like my buddy Joe went after my mother’s donuts, we would find unbelievable joy and fulfillment in his things…joy and fulfillment which vastly surpasses in DEGREE and DURATION and PURITY the joy and fulfillment we are tempted to pursue in the things of the world. Where are you going to find a better offering than INFINITE, ETERNAL, and PERFECT?

May you have an amazing week in the service of our amazing Saviour.
