2 Thess 2:1 3 – Powerful Proof of the PreTrib Rapture

Lee Brainard examines the Greek grammar, translation choices, and historical context of this important passage to explain why it distinguishes the coming of the Lord and our gathering together unto Him from the Day of the Lord.

In this episode of Prophecy in the Crucible*, Lee compares the King James Bible’s translation with modern translations, including the NASB and NKJV, and examines the Greek preposition *huper and its use with verbs of petition. He argues that the grammatical structure supports understanding the rapture as the reason believers should not be shaken by the prospect of the Day of the Lord.

Points include:

  • The meaning of 2 Thessalonians 2:1–3 in the pre-tribulation rapture debate.
  • The distinction between the coming of Christ, the gathering of the Church, and the Day of the Lord.
  • How different Bible translations affect the interpretation of this passage.
  • The Greek preposition huper and its function in petitions.
  • Examples from Koine Greek literature that illustrate the grammatical construction.
  • J. N. Darby’s explanation of how this passage influenced his understanding of the pre-tribulation rapture.
  • The historical translation of 2 Thessalonians 2:1–2 and the importance of sound grammatical analysis.

Lee’s central argument is that Paul appeals to the coming of the Lord and the gathering of believers as the reason they should not fear that the Day of the Lord has arrived. Rather than allowing a theological position to dictate the meaning of the Greek, Lee urges viewers to examine the grammar and usage of the original language.

Key Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 2:1–3 “We beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him…” (2 Thessalonians 2:1, KJV)
