If Christ were not divine,
But only fully man,
He couldn’t love the human race
The way our Savior can.
A man may sympathize
But cannot lift us up
Or set us in a better place
To drink from heaven’s cup.
He couldn’t keep the law,
He couldn’t save a soul,
He couldn’t change a wayward heart,
Or make the broken whole.
If Jesus isn’t God,
His blood could not begin,
Not even in the slightest part,
To pay the price of sin.
A human at his best
Is powerless to save.
He couldn’t conquer sin and death
Or rise up from the grave,
For all of us fall short
And cannot climb above
The sin that riddles every breath
And complicates our love.
But Jesus isn’t so.
His life and love are pure.
In Him no flaw has any place,
So He can bring our cure.
Because He’s God in truth,
Who chose to condescend,
He showers His amazing grace
And shows Himself our friend.
