The Syrophoenician Woman

The crowds were overwhelming,
      So Jesus went inside,
But needy people sought Him
      From whom He couldn’t hide.

They heard that He was able
      And gladly gave reprieve
To deepest griefs and troubles
      Of people who believe.

A woman from Phoenicia,
      Whose daughter was possessed,
Fell at His feet in anguish
      And made a bold request.

She begged Him for her daughter
      And wouldn’t take a “No.”
She knew He had the power
      To make the demon go.

He told her that the children
      Of Israel would be fed,
But dogs of other nations
      Can’t have the children’s bread.

“But dogs,” the woman answered,
      “Can lick the children’s crumbs,”
For desperation gave her
      The faith that overcomes.

Her faith so pleased the Savior,
      Because she understood,
In every dispensation,
      That God is always good.

He gave her what she wanted,
      He yielded to her plea,
And in that very hour
      He set her daughter free.

Such is the God we follow,
On whom we cast our cares.
His heart is always open
      To hear our earnest prayers.
