Willful Blindness

Thoughts on the last few verses of Mark 9

The wise are blind and blind men see —
How can this contradiction be?
It happens when the ones who know
Prefer to keep the status quo.
They have the learning to be wise,
But pride has made them close their eyes.

Their own agenda overrules
And makes the wise to act like fools.
Because they seek the praise of man,
They can’t embrace the Savior’s plan.
His program cuts across the grain,
Disrupting dreams of earthly gain.

But simple men whose eyes were sealed
Are glad to have our blindness healed.
No high pretensions hold us back
From seeking what we know we lack.
We ask the Lord to give us sight
And let Him fill our soul with light.

But those who love corruption hide.
They’d rather save their foolish pride
Than have their evil nature known
Or their position overthrown.
They hate the light that can reveal
The crookedness their lives conceal.

The men who willingly are blind
Are sinners of the darkest kind
Because they openly reject
The truth they know to be correct.
Since seeing well is what they claim,
They bear a heavy load of blame.

The Pharisees, to their own grief,
Embodied blinded unbelief.
They knew that Jesus was the Lord,
But His messiahship ignored.
Much rather they’d believe a lie
And His authority deny.
